There is a catch with AI’s ability to write bedtime stories for children

Even though AI can’t replace you at work just yet, as a parent it can assist you in telling your children engaging bedtime stories.

A feature of ChatGPT’s Plus and Enterprise subscriptions called GPTs enables users to design personalized AI chatbots with specific goals in mind.

For example, if you enjoy gardening, you could make a GPT that would respond to all of your questions about gardening.

Personalized bedtime stories for kids can be created by AI companies and parents using Open AI’s GPTs to create customized chatbots.

“I’m creatively tapped out by the end of the day and would much rather read words on a page. But my daughters adore personalized stories. So, I jumped at the chance to try an app that uses artificial intelligence to generate bedtime stories,” , parent and journalist Kelly Purch told Business Insider.

“I was slightly concerned about AI stealing my job as a content creator, but this was one writing assignment I’d gladly give up,” she continued.

How bedtime stories created by AI operate

Because GPTs and other ChatGPT-based bedtime story apps let parents and kids create customized stories, they are growing in popularity.

Let’s say your children would like to hear a humorous tale about two of their favorite cartoon characters from different shows, along with a few family members. In that scenario, you want to use the story to impart to them a valuable life lesson.

Especially after a long day, you might find it challenging to come up with or find such a personalized bedtime story on your own.

With a bedtime story app, on the other hand, all you have to do is input your children’s name, age, the moral of the story, and the characters. In a matter of minutes, the artificial intelligence will create a bedtime story that meets all of your and your children’s expectations.

While you can read stories to your children from a book, artificial intelligence (AI) enables you to write personalized stories. For this reason, AI-generated bedtime stories may seem more interesting and relatable to children.

Wired spoke with developer and father Luke Warner, who uses a customized GPT to create bedtime stories for his daughter. In its narrative, the AI “names her school, the area she lives in, and talks about the fact it’s cold outside. It makes it more real and engaging.”

Additionally, according to a 2014 study comparing the impact of non-personalized and personalized content on children’s learning, “Children show significantly better knowledge about the words that are in the personalized sections of the books than the words in the non-personalized sections.”

Concerns about bedtime stories produced by AI

One of the main concerns with AI-generated content is that a story may contain language, references, or biases that are inappropriate for children. Because of this, parents should use extreme caution when entering prompts to have their children create stories.

While the content created on OpenAI’s platforms is family-friendly and free of vulgar language thanks to its moderation API, According to Linus Ekenstam, cofounder of Bedtimestory.ai, a ChatGPT-based story generator, “it’s not perfect, but we are always improving, and it will steer away from this type of input.”

In addition, although an AI might produce relatable stories, the writing style, syntax, plot twists, and emotional appeal of children’s storybooks might not be present. Additionally, occasionally the chatbots might create dull and repetitive narratives.

A chatbot with AI can only write stories. You will still need to read it to your children and occasionally edit it as well, just in case the AI made a mistake.

Furthermore, copyright violations may result from stories produced by AI.

For the purpose of keeping their children interested, people incorporate well-known figures, locations, and even celebrities into their stories.

Of course, telling your children a story at home won’t get you in trouble with the law.

Nevertheless, OpenAI is likely to send you a takedown notice if you attempt to publish or promote your personalized chatbots or AI-generated stories publicly online. Already, this is taking place.

The bottom line is that you may be able to help your children develop a love of reading by using AI-generated bedtime stories. It might shorten the amount of time you need to spend each night trying to find a story that best fits your kids’ tastes and interests.

Making technology completely safe and kid-friendly is necessary, though.

Additionally, well-written storybooks that help kids learn valuable lessons in life and develop their character shouldn’t be considered as a substitute for them.
