National Blood Donor Month Drive will be held at Midway Movies

The Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) is partnering with Movies at Midway for the second annual National Blood Donor Month Blood Drive. This event will take place on Saturday, January 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the theater on Coastal Highway.

As a token of appreciation, all donors will receive a free movie ticket for their generous contribution.

“Movies at Midway is proud to be a part of the community and support the Blood Bank of Delmarva, especially during the challenging winter season,” said Brooke Lowe, General Manager of Movies at Midway. “We’re excited to offer our venue, making it easy for residents of Rehoboth Beach and the surrounding areas to donate blood. Plus, it’s a great bonus to receive a free movie ticket for your time.”

National Blood Donor Month, first proclaimed by President Richard Nixon in January 1970, is a time to recognize and encourage life-saving blood donations.

The winter months are particularly challenging for blood collections, with factors such as holiday travel, seasonal illnesses, and bad weather reducing donor turnout. BBD emphasizes that eligible blood donors can give every 56 days, while platelet donors are able to donate twice a month.

Blood transfusions are crucial for a wide range of patients, including those battling cancer, accident and trauma victims, newborns and their mothers, and transplant recipients. On average, one in seven hospital admissions requires a blood transfusion.
