OpenAI Introduces “Deep Research” AI Tool for Advanced Online Analysis

OpenAI has introduced a new artificial intelligence tool called “Deep Research,” designed to handle complex, multi-step research tasks on the Internet.

Powered by a special version of OpenAI’s upcoming O3 model, Deep Research is optimized for web browsing and data analysis. Users can provide prompts, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT will search, analyze, and synthesize information from a variety of online sources — including text, images, and PDFs — to produce detailed reports that can be compiled by professional research analysts.

According to OpenAI, Deep Research can complete tasks in minutes that would otherwise take a human researcher hours. However, the company acknowledged that the tool is still in its early stages and has some limitations. It can struggle to distinguish authoritative sources from unreliable information and often fails to accurately convey uncertainty.

The tool was made available on the web version of ChatGPT starting Sunday, with plans to expand to mobile and desktop apps by the end of February.

Deep Research is OpenAI’s second AI-powered agent, following the “Operator” tool introduced in January, which helps users with tasks like organizing to-do lists and planning vacations.
