Although OpenAI is said to be planning the launch of an AI-powered search engine to challenge Google, which is the industry leader, “google” has become a verb.
The announcement states that, according to two people familiar with the situation, OpenAI intends to unveil its AI-powered search tool on Monday.
The revelation may have been timed to coincide with the opening of Google’s annual I/O conference on Tuesday, when the tech giant is anticipated to reveal a number of items connected to artificial intelligence.
According to the source, OpenAI’s search solution is an addition to its core ChatGPT product, allowing ChatGPT to get straight web content and incorporate citations. OpenAI’s chatbot product, ChatGPT, generates responses to text prompts that resemble those of a human using the company’s state-of-the-art AI models.
Over the past year, OpenAI has experienced its fair share of highs and lows. One such instance was the peculiar sacking of CEO Sam Altman by the board in November 2023, which came just before Microsoft, an OpenAI investor, hired him. Five days later, Altman was rehired as CEO of OpenAI. In March of this year, Altman was added back to the board by OpenAI.
Performers, musicians, and newspapers have all filed lawsuits against OpenAI for copyright infringement. In addition, Elon Musk sued the firm for its original idea, and it has been alleged that Musk increased his engineers’ pay to prevent OpenAI from stealing them.
Industry watchers have long referred to ChatGPT as a substitute for obtaining internet data, despite the platform’s difficulties in delivering precise and up-to-date information. Previously, OpenAI integrated it with Microsoft Bing for subscribers who paid for access. Google, meanwhile, has shown generative AI capabilities for its own engine bearing the same name.
Following its launch in late 2022, OpenAI’s ChatGPT product was dubbed the fastest application to ever attain 100 million monthly active users at the time. However, according to analytics firm Similarweb, global traffic to ChatGPT’s website has been fluctuating over the past year and is only now reaching its May 2023 peak. As a result, the AI startup is facing pressure to increase its user base.
