The San Diego Padres defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, who are now leading the NL Central, 9-5 on Friday night. Jake Cronenworth led the team with four runs scored, a career-high five hits, including a home run.
In addition to making four mistakes, the Padres lost standout right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. and left fielder Jurickson Profar to injuries.
With two outs in the third, former San Diego pitcher Colin Rea hit Tatis on the left elbow with a pitch, bruising his left triceps. Tatis was taken out of the game after two innings. He collapsed into one knee in agony, and a trainer examined him. Tatis took over in right field for the following two innings after running the bases. In the fifth inning, Tyler Wade, a pinch hitter, took his place in the batting order.
“It’s going to be fairly sore,” said manager Mike Shildt. “We’ll check in on him tomorrow and kind of go from there.”
Tatis won 7–6 on Thursday night thanks to a 446-foot home run.
After hitting a double in the seventh, Profar departed. His left knee has been suffering from patellar tendinitis for a few weeks now.
Shildt remarked, “Some days are better than others.” ”He was in that moment where I appreciate it, he was like, ‘Man, it doesn’t feel great.’ Again, more grit, more heart.”
Profar came out, and Cronenworth singled off Hoby Milner (3-1) to put Oscar Azocar in as a pinch runner and take a 6-5 lead. After an error and a pitch that hit Donovan Solano with the bases loaded, the Padres added another.
“Any way we can impact the game, get out there and try to help the team win is what I’m here for,” declared Cronenworth.
“It’s just kind of what we’ve done all year. Incredible job,” remarked Cronenworth. “They jump out to that 4-1 lead and it seemed like we just kept having good at-bats and trying to grind the guy down and got to their bullpen and did a really nice job with that.”
For the Padres, Manny Machado had four hits and Luis Arraez hit a two-run home run.
Shildt remarked, “Man, you talk about some heart, grit, the ability to find solutions.” “We say it internally, winners do find solutions.”
Enyel De Los Santos recorded the final five outs for his maiden save, while Stephen Kolek (1-0) earned the victory.
With his single home run to right in the sixth inning, Cronenworth’s 12th of the game, knotted it at four. Pulling in a pinch bat, Solano blasted a game-winning single after Manny Machado doubled to chase Rea. With four hits, Machado had.
Thursday night, Cronenworth went yard for a walk-off home run.
Following back-to-back singles and Kim’s second throwing mistake of the game, the Brewers knotted the score at five in the seventh.
After catching Padres starter Dylan Cease, the Brewers seized a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning.
With two outs in the fifth inning, Arraez hit his second home run to right, sparking the Padres’ comeback.
During 4 2/3 innings, Cease struck out 10 and walked two while giving up four runs and five hits.
In 5 1/3 innings, Rea gave up five runs and six hits, walked two, and struck out none.
